On a mild Saturday morning of August 10, former students of Scott High School hosted their third annual golf outing at Detwiler Park, 4001 Summit St.

Those former students once again had the opportunity to face their revelries from other schools, such as Maccomber, Rogers, Devilbiss etc, in a different type of game and in a different type of setting. Instead of competing for city dominance, the former athletes competed in a game of golf for a first place prize of $500 and a second place prize of $300. Also, bragging rights were at stake, but more importantly, an opportunity to raise funds that would go back to Scott High School, were at stake.

“When we decided to organize this event, we knew it would be perfect for comradery, as well as exercise and some fun,” Joseph Davis, co-founder of the event, told The Toledo Journal.

Mr. Davis said the six teams participating would each start at a different hole, and rotate around until they return to their starting place; which is described as a shotgun start. Then, the participants would each hit their ball, trying to land it in a hole. Team members would play the best score of each member of the team.

“This is really amazing,” Mr. Davis said. “You can walk around and get good exercise or just ride around in a golf cart.”

Mr. Davis has been playing for four years and was introduced to the game by his wife. “Golf is a thinking man’s game,” he said. Ultimately, Mr. Davis said he’d like to see the golf outing be one of the staple events during the Scott High School Alumni weekend.

“The response has been great,” said Earnie Braswell, co-founder. “Every year, we’re looking for more people to participate, so that we can give back to the school; it’s all about giving back.”
