Sundresses & Big Hats raises funds for nonprofits

By Journal Staff Writer

Four local entities, Metorparks of Toledo, Adventurous Travels, The Sojourner Truth, and The Social Butterfly, sponsored the third annual Sundresses & Big Hats Day Party Fundraiser. The sold out event was held on Sunday, September 11 at Toledo Botanical Garden Terrace Room, 5403 Elmer Dr.

During the event, there was live entertainment by Distant Cousinz, catering by Audrey Dula Ransey, a silent auction, vendors, and a best dress contest in which the winners were awarded a prize.

Best dress winners were Marisha Raymond, left, and Sheila
Howard, “She Jag.”

Donnetta Carter, The Social Butterfly, founded and spearheaded the event. She isn’t new to the world of helping nonprofits, or businesses expand their mission or bottomline. For years, she hosted numerous venues to help fledgling businesses grow their clientele.

She told The Toledo Journal how a nonprofit is awarded the money. First, the 501c3 must be established through the State of Ohio, and have an EIN number. From there, the winning nonprofit is determined by its charitable contributions within the city. Out of 66 entries, Urban Wholistics was selected as the 2022 recipient.

“I like that Urban Wholistics is located within the central city, and helps children learn about farming,” she said. As of that moment, the event raised over $1200.00.

Ms. Carter said the theme, “Sundresses & Big Hats, was something different in which she would hope to attract the attention of more people.

Due to being in attendance at another event, Sonia Ramelle, founder of Urban Wholistics, was unable to attend, but Kristin Moncrief, secretary of the Board for Urban Wholistics was present. “We were very excited knowing that we would be the recipient,” she said. “We strive to show people how to grow their own food, without the harmful chemicals that many vegetables contain. We always welcome, and appreciate the opportunity to tell the public about us.”

Ms. Carter thanked the committee members of the event, who she said helped make it successful; Wende Perkins, Larry Jones, who was also the decorator, Veronica Phillips. Ms. Carter also thanked Nick Komives, president of the Board for Urban Wholistics.

From left, Bridget Hanson, Veronica Phillips, and Marisha Raymond.

Ms. Carter also extended a special thanks to Felica Clark, and Jackie Cummins, both of Metroparks Toledo.

Her next event is the annual Fall Expo Extravaganza, being held on October 29 at St. Clements Hall, 2990 Tremainsville Rd. For more information, Ms. Carter can be reached at 419.367.9765 or thesocialbutterflyevents@yahoo.com.
